1
Seek out the trade magazine you'd like to write for. Depending on the niche or hobby, there may be a ton of magazines or only a handfull. Begin to think about what types of articles are in the publication.
-
2
Build your writing skills by finding niche websites or groups for your hobby. Even starting a blog about different issues that are pertinent to this topic can bring about a following and give you a chance to spread your writing wings.

3
Start to collect your writing samples from other projects and create a portfolio to take to meetings with editors and also to have your samples in one place if editors ask.
-
4
After building up a portfolio and clips, begin to contact your favorite trade magazines via email or writing guidelines. Very briefly explain to them your expertise in the field, previous writing experience and any related awards you've won. Then, within four to five sentences, give a detailed idea about your article and what it should feature.

Set up networking meetings and lunches with editors to get your ideas out there and cultivate the relationships necessary to continue to land articles and pieces in the magazine.
