Taking the time to recycle toner cartridges will help the environment and can help other organizations as well. Toner cartridges will take years to break down in a landfill. They can often offer you something in return too. There are a number of ways to recycle the toner cartridges, so you get your choice of ways to get rid of them.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Return the toner cartridges to the company you purchased them from. Most companies will take them back, recycle them by refilling them and then reselling them at a discounted price. Often, the company will provide you with a discount or even payment for returning the cartridges to them.

  2. Step 2

Recycle toner cartridges through area schools, charities and even churches as a way of producing money for the organization. They will turn the cartridges in to the proper location and get a small payment for each returned cartridge, allowing them to use the funds for needed supplies. Many charities request cartridges so find out if your favorite one does recycling.

  3. Step 3

Try to refill them yourself to reuse them if you do not have a new piece of equipment under warranty (this can void new equipment's warranty.) Purchase a kit that allows you to refill the cartridges safely and quickly. Purchase these kits online through toner cartridge sellers.

  4. Step 4

Locate other organizations willing to recycle toner cartridges for you. Some pet stores, retail outlets or governmental organizations will directly collect the cartridges for you. Others will provide you with a small bag to send the cartridges to companies that reuse them or sell them to aid charities.

  5. Step 5

Send cartridges directly to companies who recycle them. One company to do this through is RecyclePlace.com. They will send you a prepaid UPS label to send the cartridges to them. They help to cut down on the 38,000 tons of plastic and metal added to the landfills yearly from toner cartridges.
