How to Become a Police Officer in Las Vegas, Nevada

  1. Step 1

    Attend a recruiting seminar held by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. These seminars are a way for the department to find out who might be interested in becoming one of the men and women who protect and serve the citizens of Las Vegas. These seminars are a great way for interested individuals to learn more about the advance training, schedule, demands, and benefits of becoming a member of this police force.

  2. Step 2

    Review the applicants study guide. This guide can be printed through the department's website. This study guide will help the applicant better prepare for the testing required to become a police officer in Las Vegas.

  3. Step 3

    Complete the selections testing. This testing is comprised of several parts including a written exam, background screening, physical fitness test, and oral test. The written examination counts for 60 percent of the total exam score. The physical fitness test is graded on a pass or fail basis. A full run down of the physical requirements can be found in the study guide. The oral interview is designed to determine if the applicant has the communication skills needed to become a successful officer. This part of the test is worth 40 percent of the total.

  4. Step 4

    Complete the background testing. This background testing is comprised of a through interview looking into all aspects of an applicants history including job performance. Applicants will be required to complete an oral interview, as well as a polygraph test, to certify the information recorded in the interview. Applicants will also be required to complete a psychological examination as well as a physical.

  5. Step 5

    Await approval from the selection committee. Following completion of the above steps, the selection committee will determine if an individual is fit to attend the Las Vegas police academy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Prior to taking the examination complete the practice tests supplied in the study guide. Also make sure to pay attention to the study guide for helpful tips for successfully passing the exam.
  • Prepare for a lengthy written exam. The department estimates that the total time for the written exam will be 4 hours.
  • Not all applicants will be accepted. Due to the nature of the work, those who fail to pass the exams will not be permitted to become a Las Vegas police officer.
