Looking for an easy way to quickly draw a rose and stem? Look no further. Learn the basic techniques to draw a simple rose on a stem using pencil. This technique can be used to draw bouquets of roses, colored roses, buds, or any combination.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drawing pad
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Water soluble colored pencils
  • Glass of water

Drawing a simple rose on a stem

  1. Step 1

Begin with the head of the rose. Draw a center or focal point of the rose in a circular motion. Using the pencil, continue to draw outlines of petals around the focal point--so that the focal point has petals on each side and across the top. At this point each petal should be drawn as connected shapes not just lines.

  2. Step 2

From the base of the focal point of the rose, draw a stem at a curved angle away from the focal point. This can start as just a single line.

  3. Step 3

Add a few leaves by drawing a leaf stem and three leaves on the leaf stem. Each leaf should come to a point and have a center vein. At the top of the stem draw a "bulb" or round bulge just below the focal point of the rose. Around this draw three small pointed leaves.

  4. Step 4

Shade in the rose and stem, creating a light affect from one direction. You can achieve this by shading parts of the rose and stem darker and leaving parts of the flower lighter. For a fuller rose, add more petals by either creating connected forms as in Step 1, or simply draw a few lines and shade those lines to make them appear thicker.

  5. Step 5

Use colored pencils to add color to the rose. Water soluble color pencils create a watercolor look to the rose by dipping the tip of the pencil into a glass of water before coloring. Create a light affect on the rose from one direction as in Step 4.

Tips & Warnings
  • To draw buds start with a smaller focal point and draw only a couple of petals around the focal point.
  • For a bouquet of roses: mix in several different sizes of roses and be sure to include some buds.
