Instructions

    • 1

Write the word "Invoice" on a new document in a large font.

    • 2

Write your full or professional name on the upper-right corner of the invoice.

    • 3

Write the address where the check for your freelance services should be mailed under your name. You also can include your phone number or e-mail address.

    • 4

Write the date and the invoice number on the upper left-hand corner of the invoice. If this is your first invoice, start with No. 001.

    • 5

Write "Bill to:" a few spaces under your name and address, followed by the name of your client.

    • 6

Write "Project:" under this and include the name of the project for which you are billing.

    • 7

Write "Quantity," "Description," "Rate" and "Amount" across one line, spacing the words evenly. Underline the words to make it clear you are creating columns. You may want to give "Description" a little more space than the other words.

    • 8

Fill in the column rows with information about the jobs you are billing for, depending on how you are being paid (hourly, weekly, flat fee, etc.).

    • 9

Write "Total:" under the "Amount" column, and write the total amount owed to you next to it.

    • 10

Write "Payment due upon receipt" at the bottom of the invoice and center it.

    • 11

Spell-check the invoice and check your math, then print two copies of the invoice--one to submit for payment and one for your records.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep track of the invoices, and keep the numbers consistent and in numerical order.

  • Make sure all the freelance terms have been agreed upon with your client before the invoice is filled out and sent.
