How to Edit an iPod Voice Memo

Use Voice Memos to record class lectures.

The iPod's Voice Memo feature allows you to record lectures and personal memos to your device. The Voice Memo requires a microphone attachment for iPods without built-in microphones. Recorded files are treated like music on the iPod, and a Voice Memo file will sync with iTunes when the device is connected to your computer. Once synced, you can edit a Voice Memo file with an audio-editing program, such as Audacity, Garageband or Wavosaur.

Instructions

  1. Sync

    • 1

Connect the iPod to your computer using a USB cable and launch iTunes. Perform a sync if iTunes is not set to sync automatically.

    • 2

Click the "Voice Memos" playlist on the left side of iTunes.

    • 3

Right-click on the Voice Memo file and select "Show in Windows Explorer" to view its location.

    • 4

Open the file in your audio-editing program, such as Audacity or Wavosaur.

    Editing with Audacity

    • 5

Launch Audacity. Click "File" then "Open." Go to your iTunes folder and select the Voice Memo file that you want to edit.

    • 6

Click and drag on the audio timeline to highlight portions of the audio. Click "Cut" to copy and remove a segment of the audio. Most of the Audacity tools are located at the top-center of the window.

    • 7

Click "Paste" to add the segment to another part of the timeline.

    • 8

Use the zoom tool to increase the size of the audio timeline.

    • 9

Zoom in on the timeline and select the "Draw" tool to fine-tune audio levels. The draw tool allows you to increase or decrease specific points of an audio file. Use the "Envelope" tool to broadly adjust levels. The audio tool can increase or decrease audio levels for the entire track, or for highlighted segments of it.

    • 10

Select and highlight a portion of the audio timeline. Click "Trim" to remove all audio except the highlighted portion.

    • 11

Click "File' then "Save" when finished.
