Step 1
Layer your clothes. Put on a breathable base layer first. This first layer is important because it keeps you dry and comfortable.
-
Step 2
Buy synthetic wicking material to keep you dry. Don't buy cotton; it gets wet easily, which can cause you to chill. Insport and Sport Hill have online stores, including a discount section (see Resources). They both do a good job of explaining the different materials and fabrics.

Step 3
Look at different running apparel companies online. You don't have to pay full price since many stores offer discounts. A good time to buy cold weather running clothes is at the end of winter when items go on sale.
-
Step 4
Ask the salesperson about breathable fabric. Don't be afraid to ask questions. The salespeople have good information on the latest technology.
-
Step 5
Prepare for very cold weather. If the temperature goes below 40 degrees F you'll want to buy a second layer, an outer shell. If it's windy wear a third layer between the base layer and the outer shell. Purchase lightweight gloves and a hat for colder weather.
