Solar powered lights make landscape and outdoor lighting a great option when no electricity exists for standard lights. Installing solar lights is one of the faster yard projects to do but makes a big impact. Setting the solar lights up just takes a few minutes and virtually anyone can do it.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Select the lights carefully and check that the number of lights you run will work with the power pack. Check the packages to determine the right combination or buy a prebuilt set that is ready to install.

  2. Step 2

Place the power pack in a well-lit area close enough to reach the first light easily. Lay the lights out and drive them into the soil. Rocky or hard soils require digging a hole to secure the light in place.

  3. Step 3

Dig a 3 inch deep trench from the power pack to the first light and continue trenching until the final light in the chain is met. Roll the wire into the trench and backfill as you go.

  4. Step 4

Start wiring at the last light in the chain by connecting the wire to the lamp assembly. Most lights use a simple wire-clamping device you install with pliers. Direct wire models hold the wire in place by inserting the bare wire around a screw and tightening it down. The red or black wire are positive and the white wire is used for negative.

  5. Step 5

Connect each light before making the final connection to the power pack. Program the light timer or motion detector at the power pack by following the manufacturer's instructions.
