How to do Mixed Martial Arts Drills

Mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions are some of the most grueling sports events around. These fighters are well trained in many aspects of martial arts techniques, wrestling and general street fighting. While strength and endurance are admirable qualities to include in your training for a MMA contest, you should also spend a lot of time in drills to hone your techniques to perfection.

  1. Step 1

    Develop your skills with drills. You should go into a MMA competition with a strategy in mind. You will want to have the drills burned into your psyche so that you won't have to think twice about your next move. MMA competitions allow no time in the ring to make changes or decisions.

  2. Step 2

    Get in the zone by doing drills that become mindless, almost second nature to you. The successful MMA fighters spend as much time training their minds as they do their bodies. Mind/body training is an integral piece of all Asian self-defense arts, which is what makes the MMA fighter all the more deadly.

  3. Step 3

    Practice drills on your weakest areas. If you are not the best at standing and kicking, then spend hours just going over and over your kicking techniques. If your takedowns need some work, then devote a good part of your drill training to performing the same takedown repetitiously until your trainer sees improvement in your skills and you feel more confident in your abilities.

  4. Step 4

    Increase the intensity of your drills as you approach the fight day. Reduce the amount of time spent on drills, but try to create a situation that more resembles the actual fighting experience. Take your drills to the next level beginning about three weeks out before a competition.
