How to Become an Electronics Technician

Electronic technicians keep the electronic equipment at companies in proper working order. Sometimes, this means troubleshooting to find problems when equipment is malfunctioning. Other times, preventive maintenance is all that is required. The training and schooling required for electronics technicians will vary depending on the specific job or specialty you want.

1. Go to school. Some electronics technician jobs will require you to have a two year degree from a vocational school or community college. More advanced jobs may require a more advanced degree.

2. Get on the job training. Some companies will hire high school graduates and train them as electronics technicians. The type of training and the length of training will depend on the equipment that the company uses.

3. Take your exam. In some cases, you will need to take a certification exam to become a licensed electronics technician. Large companies or companies with very specialized equipment may require you to be licensed to get a job.

4. Join the military. The United States Navy, for example, has a program called the Advanced Electronics and Technical Corps. Under this program, you can specialize as an Electronics Technician (ET) or Fire Controlman (FC). Both jobs teach you the fundamentals you will need in the civilian world to be an electronics technician.
