How to sew Voile Curtains

Voile fabrics are a light weight fabric made from cotton or blended with polyester and linen that make terrific curtains for your home or office. These fabrics are popular in countries where dry, hot weather is prevalent because of their light weight and sheerness. Making curtains with voile is fairly easy when you follow these steps. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your window's length where you want the rod to be placed and the curtains to hang, then add 2 inches. Measure your window's width and double or triple this measurement depending on how much of a gathered look you want in your curtains.

    • 2

Purchase your voile fabric according to your window's measurements. Buy the fabric by the yard and cut it to fit your window.

    • 3

Cut two panels from your voile fabric. Finish all the edges of both panels for your window with a serger to avoid fraying.

    • 4

Sew a 1/4-inch hem on each side and the top of your curtain panels. Turn the top of each curtain panel over to make an even wider hem, large enough for your curtain rod to go through.

    • 5

Hang the curtains in the window by your curtain rod. Measure where you want the bottom of the curtain to hang and pin the hem in place.

    • 6

Remove the curtains from the window, stitch the hem in and rehang them. You may wish to press the hem in place with an iron set on a low heat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Machine wash your voile fabric and use a cool iron on your curtains when you are finished sewing.
