Filing cabinets can keep your office organized. You can have different drawers for different customers, projects and employees. But you must make sure your office has enough space for the cabinets before you order them.

From Quick Guide: Office Furnishing
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine where you want to place the cabinets. Imagine what the filing cabinets will look like and where they will sit in your office. Figure out how many drawers you need. Allow about 1 foot of height per drawer. Decide whether you want the filing cabinets to be standard sized to allow for filing regular-sized paper or whether you need the filing cabinets to provide for space for housing legal-sized paper documents.

  2. Step 2

Tape off that area the cabinet will fill, using masking tape on a wall to indicate the ideal cabinet height and width and on the floor to indicate depth.

  3. Step 3

Measure the taped boundaries with a tape measure. You might want the filing cabinets to fit alongside a window without extending higher than the window. Measure the length, width and height (up to the window sill) of the area that you would like to place the filing cabinets.

  4. Step 4

Take the tape measure to your local office supply store and compare the sizes of various filing cabinets with the configurations your measured for your room.
