How to Use the Guarddog Firewall

If you own a Linux machine with KDE 2 or 3 running, then Guarddog Firewall may be the program for you. It blocks viruses and errors that may encrypt an Internet connection. Guarddog firewall is paranoid by design to provide you with confidence that your system is under thorough protection.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your Linux distribution for a package management system that already contains Guarddog Firewall, either automatically installed, with an included CD or in an online repository. If you have Guarddog with your Linux system, proceed to Step 3. Otherwise, see Step 2.

    • 2

Download the latest version of Guarddog Firewall (see Resources below) and install the program on your Linux machine. Program the firewall to protect what you want it to protect and how strictly. The Guarddog philosophy is that, unless your settings specifically allow something, Guarddog will block it.

    • 3

Create a desktop icon for quick access to Guarddog Firewall. In KDE, right click the desktop and select the following, in order: New, File, Link to Application. Type in a name for the icon and select the blue gear on the left to choose an icon image. Next enter "/usr/bin/guarddog" under the command field of the Application Tab. Finally, click on Advanced Options, check the "Run as a Default User" box and fill in the user name root password.

    • 4

Make a list of things that you do with your computer. Guarddog has a default "Block All" policy, so you must specify the items that you wish to allow. Your list will likely include activities such as surfing the Internet, online banking, sending and receiving emails, instant messaging, downloading files and uploading images.

    • 5

Configure protocols to your computer usage needs. For example, to configure Guarddog to allow you to access the Internet and make secure online purchases, click the "Protocol" tab and, under default network zones, select Internet. Check HTTP and HTTPS to allow Internet protocols.
