Step 1
Take a speech class. One of the best ways to learn about vendor negotiation skills is to learn the traits of a good speaker. This includes the use of tone, vocabulary levels and inflection. A soft tone can diffuse a bad situation quickly allowing for a positive resolution.
-
Step 2
Recognize a difficult situation before it arises. It's important to listen to the vendor and understand what they are saying. You need to show empathy and a want to solve the problem, not appear to have your own agenda, even if you do.
-
Step 3
Make a show of good faith. You may need to offer something to get something in return. Offer to purchase a larger quantity, for a bulk discount. Or pick the items up for a discount, to save them on shipping or delivery costs. It's important to show you are flexible and would like them to be as well.

Step 4
Be kind and humble. Treat people well and you will be treated well in return. This is the oldest lesson in the book. Don't act like the vendor is just there are your beck and call, as they have things to do and responsibilities as well. Besides, you don't want an angry vendor to deal with at every delivery.
