Fissures in your home, particularly around your windows and doors, can release warmth and let in cold air, driving your energy bills higher. You can cut off one escape route if you install an insulated attic access cover.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Measure the attic door opening, adding about 6 inches all the way around.
Step2
Order the next size bigger than your attic access cover. For example if the attic door is a 4-foot square, then get the 6-foot cover.
Step3
Place the cover over the opening before you cut it to make sure you took the measurements correctly. Once you cut it, you can't return it.
Step4
Attach the sticky side of the Velcro around the edges of the access panel, about six inches from the actual opening, or on a doorframe if you have one. Cut the cover so that it will fit over your Velcro strips. Put the Velcro on the cover and stick it up.
Step5
Buy an insulated door if you are remodeling or building a new house. The door will always keep the heating and cooling where you need it and you won't have to deal with covers that eventually wear out.
