1
Use items you have on hand to create decorations whenever possible. If you're decorating for a Halloween party, for example, use old sheets to create creepy wall hangings and ghosts and assemble silly scarecrows with old clothes that you've stuffed with wads of newspaper.
-
2
Rent pretty tableware like cups, dishes, serving platters and utensils instead of buying plastic versions if you don't have enough in your cupboard to accommodate your guests. If you have to go disposable, serve snacks on recycled paper goods or compostable plastic (see Resources below).

3
Buy decorations that you can store and use at several parties instead of tossing them after the event. For example, consider items like vibrant paper lanterns that you can display at a summer barbecue, a birthday party or a graduation celebration. Use eco-friendly accents like organic candles made of beeswax.

4
Swap decorations with friends when you tire of them rather than throwing them away. You can also donate objects from table runners to Easter baskets to a "freecycle" group so they'll find a new home rather than ending up in a landfill.
-
5
Save fuel by downloading music to set the mood for the party instead of driving to the store to buy new selections. You'll also be able to download just the songs you want rather than buying an entire compact disc.
