Step 1
Determine whether any tension springs are connected to the door. If there are tension springs, lift the door so the springs produce less tension. Too much tension can pose a danger. Consult the door's installation manual for additional safety precautions to follow while you remove the door.

Disconnect the garage door opener (if you have one) and lock one side of the garage door with a C-clamp or clamp-locking pliers if the door does not have a latch. Place the clamp below the first set of garage door wheels to prevent the door from moving down along its track once you remove the spring.

Stand on a ladder to one side of the springs and loosen the pressure on the spring with winding rods. With the pressure off the spring system, loosen the screws and dismantle the spring and pulley system and lower the garage door. Enlist assistance to lower the heavy garage door. An average door weighs 150 pounds.

Step 4
Remove the top center brace's pin to loosen the brace. Then remove the top section's hinges and rollers on one side first, and then take out the top section of the garage door with someone's help. Remove each garage door panel in the same manner.

Step 5
Remove the remaining parts of the garage door, tracks, torsion bar and the doorjamb's doorstop. If you are installing a new door, inspect and repair the doorjamb prior to installation. Do not reuse the track from the old garage door.
