From waxing and shaving to depilatories and lasers, removing unwanted facial hair is big business. Threading, the ancient Middle Eastern and East Asian practice of removing unwanted body hair with a technique involving rolling thread across skin to pull the hair out, is gaining popularity in some Western salons.

Instructions

1. Look for a threading salon with experienced threaders. Though many salons are beginning to offer the service as an alternative to waxing or tweezing, there are relatively few people with enough training and experience to perform the process, especially when it comes to eyebrows.

2. Ask around town to find the best threading salons. Web forums are always helpful, and can point you to somebody in your area who knows what they're doing. Threading can be used to remove hair around the upper lip, jaw, and sideburn area but it most commonly used to shape eyebrows. Someone less experienced with threading might only be able to create a thin arched eyebrow shape, which isn't the best look for everyone.

3. Prepare to spend $5 to $10 plus a tip for the service, and expect to have it done every 2 weeks or so. Threading is both cheap and effective if done right, which is why it's catching on so fast.

4. Avoid threading if you have very sensitive skin or acne, as the process could irritate the skin around the hair follicles or cause an acne flare up. This process can also be a bit painful, and can cause irritation and redness just like with most other facial hair removal processes.

• Don't try it yourself unless somebody has taught you how to do it correctly and you've had a few months to practice, otherwise you'll just waste a lot of time pinching yourself and not removing any hair.
