Due to increased awareness of the negative impact pesticides can exert on health, many are turning to organic solutions. Organic pesticides are just as effective as commercial products but safer. Keep the following suggestions in mind when shopping for organic pesticides.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for insecticidal soap. The main ingredients are sodium or potassium salts combined with fatty acids. The fatty acids cause the cells on the insect's outer covering to collapse. Insecticidal soap leaves no residue, and it's non-toxic to animals.

  2. Step 2

Buy products like GreenCureĀ® or Kaligreen. These products contain potassium bicarbonate as the main ingredient and are effective at fighting fungal growth. Spray at the first signs of disease and notice immediate results.

  3. Step 3

Purchase Rotenone. It's available in powder form and comes from the roots of tropical legumes. This product works by interrupting the cellular process and depriving the insect of oxygen.

  4. Step 4

Consider neem oil. This pesticide's main ingredients are azadirachtin and liminoids, both derived from the seeds of the neem tree fruit. Neem affects the insect's hormonal system and prevents it from advancing to the mature phase. It's effective on species of insects that go through a metamorphosis.

  5. Step 5

Protect your pets and birds when you use BT (Bacillus thuringiensis). It comes in powder form, which you can sprinkle or dust on plants. Once the insects eat it, BT releases toxins that cause them to die from starvation. This organic pesticide is safe for people and bees.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid using insecticidal soap in high temperatures or in full sunlight since it can burn plants.
