When you plan to garden organically, you should evaluate the products you use to help your plants grow. To feed your plants, you may use mulch, a garden feeding mixture containing healthy nutrients. To keep your garden eco-friendly, you can buy organic mulch.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Estimate how much of the organic mulch you're going to need for your garden. To estimate, measure the square footage of the garden you wish to mulch. Then decide how deep you want the mulch to cover the plants.

  2. Step 2

Look at the different materials used in organic mulch. In order for the mulch to have an organic label, it must have at one point come from a living material, like grass, leaves, bark or pine needles.

  3. Step 3

Purchase the organic mulch from a garden center or home improvement store. You'll want to pick up your organic mulch locally or call for delivery from a garden center. Lowe's and Home Depot both carry a selection of organic mulch.

  4. Step 4

Choose your organic mulch products. You'll find numerous manufacturers of organic mulch. For example, P & L Bark makes organic Pine Bark Mulch and Sweeney Seed Company produces The Real Bark.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also make organic mulch by applying a mixture of lawn clippings and wood chips over a fabric weed barrier.
  • Watch for rodents and bugs when using an organic mulch. In moist climates, the organic mulch may attract snails and slugs to your garden beds.
