Ask for muriatic acid at hardware stores or home supply stores. It's also called hydrochloric acid and is often stocked near paint or outdoor supplies.

Check your local pool store or the pool section at your local department store. Look at the product labels to find solutions that contain muriatic acid in the strength you need.

Order muriatic acid from a dealer who sells specialty cleaning products, chemicals or marine supplies, like Sigma Aldrich or Jamestown Distributors.

Prepare a space to store the muriatic acid. It should be in a space that is out of the reach of children and away from other chemicals that could cause a dangerous reaction. Check the product label for storage and disposal information.

Look for alternatives to muriatic acid. Phosphoric acid and TSP (trisodium phosphate) are heavy duty cleaning products that are safer to use and may produce the same results. Consider renting a mechanical tool to clean masonry.

Stock up on other items to help you use the acid safely, including acid resistant gloves, goggles, a respirator, rubber boots and resistant coveralls. Get tarp to cover plants and grass if the acid will be used outdoors.

Purchase neutralizing agents, such as garden lime or baking soda, that can be applied if the acid gets spilled. Have plenty of containers of water nearby when you work with the acid.
