When you think of exotic pets for sale, the first thing to come to mind may be over-sized South American snakes and reptiles. However, there are a host of exotic pets available that many people would consider great pets. By complying with all laws and regulations, you may find yourself making a living from the sale of exotic pets that people want.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Acquire the necessary permits to run a pet store. These vary by state, so make sure you are in compliance with both state and federal law.

  2. Step 2

Set up your store in a business-zoned district.

  3. Step 3

Familiarize yourself with the pets you're getting before you actually get them. Some exotic pets are temperamental, and without a stable environment waiting for them they may get sick.

  4. Step 4

Contact an exotic pets wholesaler. Even if they aren't able to get you the pets you need, they are still valuable sources of information. They can give you tips on how to care for exotic pets, and on where else to find them.

  5. Step 5

Research breeders of exotic pets in your area. This works best if you need a specific pet, as most breeders only breed one type of animal.

  6. Step 6

Work with other exotic pets retailers to buy and sell animals. If you view them as colleagues rather than competitors, you can share information and sources.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't attempt to get exotic pets from the wild. Apart from legal and ethical considerations, you can never be sure what you're getting. Wild animals may carry parasites and other diseases.
