Hopscotch is a common children's game that can be played virtually anywhere and offers great exercise. Whether drawing your painting your hopscotch court, scratching it into the sand or dirt or using a hopscotch rug, make sure your hops count by learning how to properly score.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chalk, masking tape or hopscotch rug
  • Hopscotch markers (stones, beanbags, bottle caps)
  • Straws (for selecting playing order)
  1. Step 1

Create your hopscotch court with chalk, masking tape or lay out a hopscotch rug. Make sure that you have at least 8 squares in your pattern and that all of the squares are clearly numbered. Finally, before you begin to play, give each player a marker, such as a stone, beanbag or bottle cap.

  2. Step 2

Draw straws to choose the lineup of play if you like, and then allow the players to create a line at the beginning of the hopscotch court.

  3. Step 3

Toss your marker into the first square and then begin hopscotch. To score and move to the next square, you must hop through the boxes without touching a line or entering a square that has a marker. You can hop on both feet if the squares are doubled; however, only if there are no markers in the boxes.

  4. Step 4

Make it to the end of the hopscotch court without falling, stepping on a line or hopping in a marked box and your score, allowing you to pick up your marker from the first box on your next turn and toss it into the second box. From this round forward, in order to score, you must hop into the box before your marker and bend forward to pick up your marker. If you fumble in any way, you do not score and must place your marker back into the box you just picked it up from.
