Hopscotch is a fun game that offers kids a means of entertaining exercise. Western hopscotch, which is the original version of hopscotch and different from games played in India, Australia and other parts of the world, is playable virtually anywhere, anytime if you just have the right tools. Once you know the rules, you'll be ready to hop along.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chalk or masking tape
  • Yardstick or measuring tape
  • Markers (small rock, a bean bag)
  1. Step 1

Begin by using chalk or masking tape to make your hopscotch on the ground. The hopscotch is created by make five 12 by 12 inch squares in a long row, followed by two boxes side by side, and a final single box at the end. In Western hopscotch, a dome shape is drawn at the top of the hopscotch to allow players a place to rest. Number the boxes 1 through 8, with 6 and 7 side by side and the dome shape left without a number.

  2. Step 2

Give each player a marker, such as a small rock, a bean bag or other object and then draw straws to form the playing order. Players stand in a line behind the first box and toss a marker into the first square. After tossing, the player hops over the square with her marker and continues on one foot until she reaches squares 6 and 7, where she can put down both feet.

  3. Step 3

Continue hopping on one foot to the dome area where the player turns around and hops back to the beginning. When he reaches the square before his marker, he must balance on one foot and pick up her playing piece, hop into the first square and then out, allowing the next player to go.

  4. Step 4

Begin the second turn by tossing the marker into the second square and repeating the hopscotch. The player finishes when she tosses her marker into the 8th and final square and successfully hops her way through. In Western hopscotch, if the player misses the toss, they place the marker into the target square and sit out their turn until the next round.

  5. Step 5

Lose a turn if you lose your balance as you hop, switch hopping feet mid-play, hop into a square with both feet, step on a line or hop into a square where your marker is resting. If you lose your turn, leave your marker in the last box it was in and play the hopscotch on the next round.
