Prevent Bone Bruises

Bone bruises are caused by significant trauma to a bone, often caused by falling or striking a bone during physical activity. While the bone itself is injured, bone bruises are not as severe as fractures, causing the most damage to the periosteum, or the covering of the bone. While it can be quite difficult to prevent bone bruises, there are a few things you can do for safety.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that you train properly for any sport you take part in. Whether you jog, play soccer, practice martial arts and more, learning proper form will help you to prevent falls and other fumbles which can lead to bone bruising.

    • 2

Wear protective gear when applicable. For instance, if you practice kickboxing, sparring with arm and leg pads will reduce the blow of your opponent's strikes which when forceful enough can cause bone bruises.

    • 3

Wrap your wrists and ankles before practicing your favorite sport, particularly if your are practicing a combat sport and/or are prone to sprains and strains. Simply wrapping delicate joints adds additional stability and can prevent bone bruises.

    • 4

Take care when walking and jogging on slippery surfaces. Falling on ice, slipping while running and stumbling in a pair of high-healed shoes are common accidents that lead to bone bruises on shins, knees and the tailbone. While it is difficult to prevent and predict these situations, wearing shoes with good traction and taking extra care when walking on slippery surfaces can surely reduce the risk of falls that cause bone bruises.
