How to Change a Digital Picture From Color to Black and White

Some digital cameras allow you to take pictures in black and white. Other digital cameras only take color pictures. If your camera is one of these, it is possible to change a color picture to a black and white picture.

Instructions

    • 1

Transfer your pictures from your digital camera to your computer. If your computer has a memory card drive, consider using that. You can also use a USB cable or transfer dock.

    • 2

Get Paint.Net. It is a free program that has a feature to change color digital photos to black and white.

    • 3

Open your pictures using Paint.Net. You may have to right click on the picture and click on "Open With" to pull up the menu that will allow you to choose Paint.Net.

    • 4

Click on "Adjustments" on the Menu Bar once the digital photo is open in the window of Paint.Net.

    • 5

Choose the option "Black and White" from the drop down menu. This will change your picture automatically to black and white.

    • 6

Save your picture. If you want to preserve the original picture, you have to save the black and white photo using a different name than the original. You can find the "Save As..." under the "File" option on the Menu Bar.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can press Ctrl+Shift+G to transform the picture from color to black and white instead of using the Menu Bar options if you want.

  • Instead of using the Menu Bar to access the "Save As..." option, you can press Ctrl+Shift+S.
