How to Become a Muslim

Becoming a Muslim is deceptively simple. It takes a simple statement that renounces all other religions and acknowledges Allah as the only God with Mohammed as his prophet. There are other things that make you a "good Muslim," but technically, they aren't required to become a Muslim.

Instructions

    • 1

Declare the following statement: "There is no god apart from God and Mohammed is his prophet." This is the only thing that's absolutely required for you to become a Muslim; it renounces all other religions and gods and simultaneously acknowledges Mohammed, Islam's prophet.

Start visiting a mosque in your area. Be careful as you arrive and wait to be instructed on what to do. It's up to you whether you want to observe one of the five prayer times during the day or to go before or after prayer to meet with someone and begin learning about Islam. There, you'll learn the five pillars of Islam.

    • 3

Ask for a copy of the Koran (Qu'ran). If they don't offer to provide you with a copy of the Koran, ask for one. It's not likely that you'll need to go buy one for yourself, unless you want a nicely bound leather version.

    • 4

Buy a prayer mat so that you can pray on your own at home or work or wherever you are during each of the five prayers each day. Actively observe the five prayers every day. Learn how to bow and what to say as you pray.

    • 5

Give alms to the poor. To some this is known as tithing, and for others it is called zakat. In Islam, it is usually 2.5 percent of your income. This doesn't secure you as a Muslim, but it's a requirement of the faith as part of the five pillars.

    • 6

Fast for Ramadan. Fasting does not make you a Muslim, but it is one of the five pillars of Islam.

    • 7

Make pilgrimage (hajj) to Mecca at least once in your life. Again, this is one of the five pillars and as a type of proof that you're a good Muslim, it validates that you are, but the only thing necessary is your declaration in Step 1.

Tips & Warnings

  • Women must always wear a head covering inside a mosque and are separated from the men.

  • Take off your shoes when entering the mosque.
