Step 1
Make sure your rifle is stored in a safe location. Particularly, keep it out of the reach of children. Do not leave any weapon for children to play with, no matter how many times you have told them it is not a toy. Keep a trigger guard on the rifle just to make sure. If you plan on using the weapon for self defense, then investigate the different types of guards that you can purchase that will allow you easy access to the weapon in case of need.

Step 2
Keep the rifle clean and in good working order. This will include taking it out and firing it periodically to make sure the sights are dead on. Since a rifle is for distance shooting, it is vital that the sights are properly "sighted" in.
-
Step 3
Wipe the rifle down with a lightly oiled cloth to remove hand oils and other liquids from clinging to the metal and wood parts of the rifle. Left for a long period of time these types of materials can and will damage both the finish and potentially the metal or wood.

Step 4
Store an heirloom or collector's piece in a display and make the display a centerpiece of some room in your home.
