Bumping locks is a way that thieves can enter your home. These thieves use an old locksmith technique that allows them to easily open a single cylinder lock. Bump proof door locks use keys, PIN codes or scan technology to open.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Drill the holes necessary for proper installation using a power drill. Most bump proof door lock kits will have a template for you to use to drill the holes.

  2. Step 2

Slide the latch bolt assembly through the hole on the side of the door. Make sure that the curved side of the latch bolt is facing the side of the door that reaches the door jamb first. This allows your door to close smoothly. If locking pins are provided, follow the manufacturer's instructions to install them now.

  3. Step 3

Place the key operated side of the bump proof door lock on the exterior side of the door. Make sure that you slide the pins through the appropriate holes in the latch bolt assembly.

  4. Step 4

Line up the blank side of the bump proof door lock on the interior side of the door. You need to make sure that the pins line up with the ones from the exterior panel. Push the interior part of the bump proof lock toward the door until it is against the door.

  5. Step 5

Screw the bump proof door lock onto the door. Most models will have screws only on the interior side of the door. This is a safety feature so that thieves are unable to simply unscrew the lock to gain entry.

  6. Step 6

Install the strike plate. You will need to securely screw the plate onto the side of the door.
