Knot tying can be used for a variety of hobbies and sports. When it comes to sailing using various types of hitches will help secure the many lines on board the boat.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stretch out a long piece of rope. The rope should be of medium thickness and quite malleable, as you'll need "give" in order to make the double rings.

  2. Step 2

Tie the ends of the rope together so that you have made a loop. For tying the ends, using the old reliable square knot is advisable.

  3. Step 3

Place the untied end of the loop you just made through the ring.

  4. Step 4

Open up the loop so that it stretches over the outer edges of the ring.

  5. Step 5

Pull the tied end of the rope tight. This will cause the loop that went through the ring and then around the outer edges to become taut. This completes your first ring hitching.

  6. Step 6

Insert the tied end of the rope through the ring.

  7. Step 7

Open up the tied end so that it expands over the outer edges of the ring as well. You are mimicking your previous actions that formed the first hitching. The only difference is that you are using the other end of the rope.

  8. Step 8

Pull the long end of the rope tight to complete your double ring hitching.

Tips & Warnings
  • Double ring hitchings are best utilized on a boat where you want to tie metal rings together so that they don't flop around with the blowing wind.
