The Frontside 180 is a beginning snowboarding trick usually performed off of a jump or ramp. As its name implies, the basic element of the trick is a 180-degree spin or half-turn. The trick is pretty easy, but if you've never done one before it can seem a little intimidating. To learn the Frontside 180 you'll want to find a secluded place to practice and follow the following tips.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Build a small ramp somewhere free of other boarders or skiers. Backyards work the best, since you'll be close to home in the event of a wipe out.
Step2
Visualize the jump and landing before trying it in real life. Before you jump you need to be certain you'll go high enough to make the Frontside 180 and far enough to make the landing.
Step3
True your snowboard and head down the hill into the jump. Continue to visualize the 180 and imagine how much torque you'll need to complete the spin.
Step4
Twist your upper body toward the back of the board.
Step5
Ride off of the ramp's lip instead of intentionally jumping.
Step6
Uncork your torso and let your feet and the board follow. Help yourself spin by pulling your front heel back and pushing your back toes forward.
Step7
Look for your landing spot while you're in the air. This keeps you on balance and helps you straighten out when you hit the snow.
Step8
Land with your weight slightly on your back foot to avoid planting the snowboard's nose in the snow and wiping out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Extend your arms for balance and increased rotation during the spin.
  • Don't over-rotate. Carefully time your spin so you land right as you're completing the 180.
  • Don't ride without a helmet.
