Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Act as quickly as you can. The longer the stain is there, the harder it'll be to get rid of.
Step2
Scrape away as much asphalt as you can from the carpet, taking care not damage or pull up the carpet fibers.
Step3
Use a dry cleaning solvent or a spot remover that contains petroleum naphtha or trichloroethylene. Read the directions on your product, but in general, soak the stain with your stain remover and leave in place for a few minutes. If you've never used this product before, test it in an inconspicuous location to make sure it won't change the color of your carpet.
Step4
Cover the stain with cloth soaked in your cleaning product and see if the asphalt lifts. Change the cloth periodically.
Step5
Blot the stain with a clean, dry cloth or gently rub the fibers upward. Never rub asphalt stains into the carpet or you'll damage the carpet fibers. Change the cloth as it becomes soiled and start over with clean a cloth.
Step6
Rinse the cleaning product away with clean water.
Step7
Blot at the area with a clean, dry cloth to help the area dry. You can also set up a floor fan or open a window.
