Getting on and off a ski lift is a basic fundamental of snowboarding. The key to getting on and off a lift is balance. As a beginner in a winter sport such as snowboarding, it may seem daunting to try getting on and off on the ski lift at first, but as with any sport, practice makes perfect.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lift ticket
  • Winter clothing
  • Snowboard
  • Bindings
  • Boots
  • Helmet
  1. Step 1

Strap your front foot into your snowboard binding and use your back foot to push yourself through the ski lift line. If you are a beginner, then make sure you go with a partner so he can help you. Once you reached the front of the line, wait for the ski lift operator's signal and move forward. Sit down when the chair arrives.

  2. Step 2

Lower the safety bar and wait for the ride up. When you approach the top, raise the safety bar, and prepare to get off by sitting sideways and point your snowboard straight out in front of you..

  3. Step 3

Lift your snowboard tip up as you approach the snow and stand up. As you are standing up, place your back foot on the stop pad and let the ski lift chair push you. Note that the stomp pad will help with your balance and grip and is usually located between the two bindings on the snowboard.

  4. Step 4

Look straight ahead as you are snowboarding off of the ski lift. Once you are clear you can use a toe-side stop.

  5. Step 5

Practice. You may not be able to get off the first time, but with practice you will be carving and shredding just like everyone else on the mountain.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can tell the ski lift operator to slow down the lift by raising your hands then lowering them. This move will make it easier for you to get off.
  • Don't worry if you fall; get up and quickly move out of the way so that the next people on the lift don't run in to you.
  • Take a snowboarding lesson to learn the basic fundamentals of snowboarding. Your instructor will also teach you how to get on and off the lift.
  • You are not allowed to ride down on the ski lift. When you approach the top, you must get off.
