While grocery shopping the other day I thought about bread crumbs. Why pay for something that I can make myself? So I'm going to suggest a way to make bread coating yourself.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Left over crusts of bread, assorted seasonings,a large bowl,an empty washed pickle type jar and a paper bag.
  1. Step 1

Take your leftover crusts and toss them into a big paper shopping bag. You'll want to collect quite a few of these. Let these guys dry out for at least 3 days or longer until they're crunchy. It will probably take a while to amass a nice collection these.

  2. Step 2

Now after your bread is dried enough to crumble start breaking the bread apart with your hands. A kitchen screen works great with that jar I mentioned earlier. Just take the jar and start crushing through the screen to get the crusts a fine structure. No screen? Use the jar and crush bread in the bowl. It will just take a little longer.

  3. Step 3

Put the crushed crumbs in a container such as a tupperware or any bowl with a sealed lid. Don't add any seasoning yet. I would keep the crumbs neutral for now. You can always add your seasonings later. For example, if you want hot cajun for your chicken take enough out for that application. If you want Italian for those pork chops take out for that recipe. I think you get the idea.

Tips & Warnings
  • I like to use a couple different types of bread. Like rye,French,Italian, regular old white etc. That gives your mix a unique flavor. These bread crumbs work great for fish and a pretty good filler for meatloaf recipes.
  • If your bread was sitting in the kitchen cabinet too long without drying keep an eye out for the green monster(mold). Toss it out, that will not enhance the flavor at all. Though if you are a kind of a weirdo by all means use the moldy bread.
