Congratulations! You've been granted work study funds for college! Here's how to get the right work study job for you!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Assess Your Needs ~ Determine what you need in a work study position. Are you looking for degree related work experience? Do you want a position that will allow for study time? Or do you want a position that offers you a chance to socialize? Deciding what you want from your work study position is the first step in getting the right job.
Step2
Start Early ~ As soon as you receive your student aid information, call the college or university you wish to attend. Ask for information regarding available work study positions. Also ask for information on applying for work study positions. Just as there is a limited number of work study positions available to students, departments within the school are limited as to the number of work study positions they can offer. Start early and apply for the most desirable position before someone else does. Otherwise, you may be washing lunch trays.
Step3
Apply with Style ~ If you're applying for a particularly desirable work study position, such as research assistant or tutor, you will benefit from having a resume, reference list, and a cover letter. For highly competitive positions, it is recommended you use traditional job search techniques to apply. This includes maintaining professional appearance and conduct.

For less desirable positions, such a library assistant, you may not even need to fill out an application.
Step4
Bad Jobs ~ If the job you have selected turns out to be less than you imagined, you can always find another work study position. However, you will benefit from making this decision early and taking action immediately. The longer you wait, the fewer positions there will be to choose from.
Step5
What if I Can't Do It?

If you decide, for any reason, work study is not for you, simply return to your school's financial aid office and ask to have the remaining work study funds converted to a student loan. Be sure to know which form of student loan your funds will be converted to. Interest varies by form of student loan.

on 8/3/2008 I found out there are some good scholarships that you can apply for at http://www.scholarship-listings.com

I applied for all of them yesterday, and I'm hoping I get one! (:

Anyone regardless of age, what you are studying, or what school you go to can qualify. They range from $10k to $50k. I think it's worth checking out!

on 7/11/2008 Also check how the work study is given to your account. Many work study checks are give to the student and it is up to the student to apply it to their loans. Also if you know you will be getting work study, you may drop a note of intention to a department you want to work for in the summer. Then contact them as soon as you get your letter. (letter should be similar to cover letter to a job.) Great article. 5 stars.
