Expression is the Key to Life

Engaging a child who is in preschool to learn how to read and write can be a difficult task for any parent or caregiver. Here is an activity that can give your preschooler the courage they need to strive!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8 5x6 rectangle cut construction papers.
  • Black or blue marker.
  • 6 strips of white paper.
  • A box of crayons
  • Stapler
  1. Step 1

Take 8 5x6 sheets of rectangle cut construction papers and stack them together. Staple right hand side together to bind the papers into a form of a book.

  2. Step 2

Take 6 pieces of striped papers and place a stripe of paper on each page. The first page is the cover of the book therefore, there should not be a strip nor the last page of the book. Set to the side to dry.

  3. Step 3

While the book is drying, speak to your preschooler and ask them to tell you a story about their favorite person, place or thing.

  4. Step 4

While the preschooler tells you their story jot down quotes of their story, in story board order.

  5. Step 5

Once paper is dry, write on the strips of papers in the book each sentence to re create their story.

  6. Step 6

Then have the preschool use their crayons to illustrate the cover, and pages to match their story.

  7. Step 7

Once the book is complete, have the preschool practice reading their own words of their story.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can put the book together a day before the activity with the child will occur.
  • Use their exact words even if it did not make much sense.
  • Have the preschooler re do this project once a week, or once a month.
  • EBay is a great source for craft supplies and their products are priced wonderfully, you can find a link to products from EBay in the resource section of this article.
  • I have also found that Amazon.com has a great selection of scrapbooks, their scrapbooks are a great way to take this idea and create something memorable with your child. I have placed a link in the resource section for Amazon.com for your convenience.
