Use a light rum for most mixed drinks. Light rums have little to no taste and are popular for using in mixed drinks. They are clear in color. The Brazilian liquor cachaça belongs to this category as well as anything labeled with white, silver or light rum.

2
Select a gold rum for more flavor. Gold or amber rums are aged in oak barrels used for making bourbon. This gives them a smokier flavor and a dark color.

Use dark rum for cooking, sipping or mixed drinks. Dark rum is a grade darker than gold rum. It is aged longer in charred barrels. Dark rum has a much stronger flavor than either light or gold rum. You will find it spicier and with an overtone of caramel.

Sip premium rum. Don't bother making mixed drinks out of premium rum. Truly fine rums were made to be sipped and enjoyed for their own flavor. You are better off using a cheaper rum if you want to mix. Premium rums are aged longer and usually made in small batches. They have a strong flavor and color.

Enjoy flavored or spiced rums on the rocks or in drinks. Some rums are made with flavors like lime, coconut, or raspberry. You can sip these straight or use them in a variety of tropical drinks. Spiced rums have their own distinct flavors and are also good on their own or with a mixer.
