Whether you are concerned about a scraped knee at the playground, an allergic reaction to a bee sting, or a catastrophic situation such as a storm or terror attack, you should be prepared with an emergency first aid kit.

From Quick Guide: Basics of Emergency Kits
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A container or box
  • Bandages
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Soap or antibacterial wipes
  • Aspirin or Ibuprofen
  • Water
  • Prescription medications
  • Tweezers
  • Eyewash
  • Sterile gloves
  1. Step 1

Find an appropriate container, bag or box to use as an emergency first aid kit. Make sure that the box is properly labeled as an emergency first aid kit.

  2. Step 2

Show the box to everyone living in your household. Explain what it is, what it will be used for, what is in it, and where it will be stored.

  3. Step 3

Put all of the first aid contents into the box.

  4. Step 4

Keep the box in a safe place that will be easily accessible in an emergency. If your family has an emergency area, such as a basement, where you keep extra water and a radio, then that might be a good place to keep your emergency first aid kit.

  5. Step 5

Review the contents of your first aid kit periodically to make sure that it has everything that you need. For example, if you have a baby, then you might need to add infant medications. If an elderly relative comes to live with you, then you might need to add additional prescription medications.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many people find it useful to have a first aid kit that they keep in their car or purse, as well as a first aid kit that they keep in their home.
  • Remember to add prescription medications that have been prescribed for family members at any time after you create your emergency first aid kit.
  • Remember to refill anything that you use out of your first aid kit--as soon as possible--so that it's ready for the next emergency.
