Trees are one of Mother Nature’s best creations. Trees are not only spectacular to gaze at, but they are extremely beneficial to our very own survival because of their ability to cleanse the air. Trees can add value to your property and insulate your home from both wind and heat. There are an endless variety of trees available that range in all sizes, colors and styles. There is certainly a “tree for everyone” that desires one. It is important to take proper care of your tree to ensure its survival.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Tree(s)
  • Mulch
  • Fertilizer
  • Pruning tools
  • Rake
  • Shovel
  • Water
Step1
Examine your trees routinely. Your trees need to be checked at least annually for any problems. You can do this more often, but be sure to at least do it annually. Look for any changes in your trees appearance. Check the leaves, stems, branches and trunk area. It is better to catch problems early so you can take care of them. When you come across changes in your trees, keep an eye on them and take further action if needed. There is a link in the Resources below for the Arbor Day Foundation where you can find more particulars about changes in the trees and other helpful tree details.
Step2
Provide your trees with enough mulch. Mulching your trees is useful for several reasons. It will retain the dampness in the dirt around the trees' roots, it will stop the invasion of weeds and protect the trunks from damage that can occur from mowers and weed whackers. Do not skimp on using mulch around your trees. You should use at least three inches of mulch and cover as much of the root system of the tree as possible. Depending on the tree species, this area could be distant from the actual perimeter of the tree. Leave the area around the base of the tree free of mulch. You do not want the mulch to touch the trunk or it may cause rot.
Step3
Give your trees nutrients and water. It is important to provide trees with the essential nutrients needed to thrive. This will vary from tree species, soil conditions, climates and other factors. In order to find the correct fertilizer for your tree and area, you can consult an arborist to check the soil. Provide plenty of water for your trees, but also remember the root system of the tree goes well beyond the trees canopy and water accordingly.
Step4
Prune your tree as needed. You should trim away any diseased, rotted or dead branches. Pruning trees is a very vital process of caring for them, but it can be very damaging to them if not properly done. Before you do any type of tree trimming be certain you know hot to do it correctly.
