How to Celebrate Independence Day on the Gulf Coast

Independence Day, also known as the Fourth of July, is a day of celebration for Americans. It's a day filled with fun, fireworks and food no matter where you are--in Hawaii, Kansas or the Texas Gulf Coast. Every area has its own schedule of events and things to do at a variety of locations so you can try to hit them all or just pick one that sounds fun!

Things You'll Need:

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Sunblock
  • Sweatshirt
  1. Step 1

Watch the annual parade at Meadows Place, Texas (slightly north of Sugar Land). The parade starts at ten in the morning so get there early for a good view. The parade segues into a bike and buggy display followed by marching bands and mariachi music. Grab a bite to eat on your way there and enjoy some brunch as you watch patriotism pass by on the parade route.

  2. Step 2

Head over to Rosenberg (about half an hour away) for the kids. They have a Radio Disney performance, great food and activities. For adults and kids alike, head out west on a horse drawn wagon ride or take in a bit of history with the Rosenberg Railroad Museum's ongoing activities.

  3. Step 3

Take in the sights and sounds at Sugar Land which is about twenty-five minutes northeast of Rosenberg. The kids will stay amused with bounce houses, stilt walkers, clowns and a children's live stage. The adults can enjoy Motown music, a "Password" game on stage and a variety of food choices.

  4. Step 4

Watch a BMX bike show hosted by Wheels of Style at Marshall High School in Missouri City (10-15 minutes from Sugar Land) in the early evening hours. Also listen to the musical stylings of Hamilton Loomis.

  5. Step 5

End your day with a comfortable seat and blanket at the SMSD football stadium in Stafford (between Sugar Land and Missouri City). They have a parade and marching band followed by a spectacular view of a fireworks show. Have fun and stay safe!
