How to Use the Clutch on a Motorcycle

So you just got a new motorcycle and you have no idea how to use the clutch on it? Using the clutch on a motorcycle is very important, as you have to use the clutch to shift gears. It's a bit awkward at first, but once you get down using the clutch, it will become easier for you.

Instructions

Hold the clutch in. The clutch will be a metal lever sticking out next to the handle grips on the handle bars. You will need to grip and hold down this lever when you start the bike and when you shift gears.

    • 2

Shift the bike into neutral. Still holding the clutch, toe down on the shifting lever until you cannot shift any lower. Toe the shifting lever up one step and this will put you into neutral.

    • 3

Start the bike. This will be either a push button start or a kick start depending on the type of motorcycle that you have.

    • 4

Hold the clutch in again and shift the bike down one to first. You should feel the bike jolt a little bit as it sets itself into gear.

    • 5

Release the clutch slowly and give your bike enough gas to get moving. This part is very important. After the bike is started and in first gear, you will need to release the clutch just fast enough. If you release it too fast, then the bike will jolt forward and probably die. If you release it too slow, the engine will chug out and die on you. It's important that you give it just enough to get moving.

Listen to the motor so that you know when to shift gears. When the motor needs to be shifted, you will hear the RPM's get very high, and it will start making a high squeeling type of noise, kind of like a chainsaw.

    • 7

Hold in the clutch, let off of the throttle and shift the bike up once. Once the bike is shifted, let off of the clutch and give the bike some throttle immediately. When you are moving, shifting up from first gear will skip neutral and put you right into second gear.

Tips & Warnings

  • The clutch on the bike must be held in to change gears.

  • The gears on a bike go in this order: first, neutral, second, third, fourth and fifth.

  • Tapping the shift lever up with your toes will shift you up one step, and tapping it down will shift you down one step.

(im a beginner).one last thing- if you dont succesfully pass your cbt and understand clutch control first time is it likely you will have trouble the second time?
