Step 1
Fill out a form online. There is a car donation form you can fill out online in order to make arrangements for a tow truck to come out and pick it up. This will also depend on how far away you are from the IRS office in your state. After you fill out the form you will receive an email as a confirmation that they recieved your form. Then you should recieve a call from a tow company that will make arrangements with you when they can come by to pick it up. This could take up to a couple of days.
-
Step 2
Provide the title and keys to the car. When the person comes to tow the car then you be sure to get a receipt of when the pick up happened and that it was given for donation.
-
Step 3
Call the IRS office in your state. They can make arrangements with you in order to either have someone pick it up or you may have to figure out how to get it to them. In most cases the IRS will have a two truck come out to you but there are rare situations that either it isn't worth their while or it may also depend on the age of the car which can factor into whether or not they will send someone out to come get it.
-
Step 4
Find out how much your car will be deducted. If you are not sure and your car doesn't run and is old then you may only be able to claim $500 for it as a write off on your taxes for donations. In order to find out more information regarding how much you could get for your car you can read the IRS Publication 4302 or the Donor's Guide to Car Donations.
-
Step 5
Claim the amount the car is sold for. If the IRS sells your car for more than $500 then you will receive a letter in the mail notifying you how much the car was sold for and this will be the amount you will claim on your taxes. You can also claim blue book value if it is in good condition.

Step 6
Take the deduction on your taxes if you donate the car to another charity organization.
