    Building a Plane for Woodworking

  1. Step 1

Measure the width and the length of the blade you are using then square off your block of wood by making it one inch wider than your blade and two inches longer.

  2. Step 2

Measure five inches from the front of the block of wood and mark it on the bottom of the block then measure 1/8" from the end of the mark forward toward the front to lay out the mouth.

  3. Step 3

Draw a 60 degree angle beginning from the forward edge of the mouth toward the front of the block and repeating for both sides. From the back of the mouth draw a 45 degree angle toward the back of the block, repeating for both sides. Using your pencil draw a line across the top of the block that will connect the two 60 degree lines and both 45 degree lines.

  4. Step 4

Turn the block on its side and measure one inch from the top of the block and draw a circle that is 3/8" in diameter.

  5. Step 5

On the top of the block measure in 3/8" from the sides of the block for both sides.

  6. Step 6

Measure at each of the corners 1/2" down and 1/2" away and drill 3/8" holes 3/4" deep. These holes are for the dowel rods so cut the dowels to be 5/8" long and set aside.

  7. Step 7

Cut along the lines you have drawn and piece the wood together to check for fit.

  8. Step 8

Paint the dowel rods with a thin layer of glue then assemble the plane together topping off the dowel holes with more glue and nail into place to anchor them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always check your measurements before final assembly.
  • The more pressure you use the more wood will be shaved off.
  • When using any type of power tools always use the proper safety equipment.
