Things You'll Need:
- Sterling silver flatware
- Mild detergent
- Soft cloths
- Clean, dry drawer
- Silver polish
-
Step 1
Wash your silver flatware as soon as possible after using it. Use a mild detergent to wash it, then dry it by hand with a soft cloth. If you are pressed for time, you could stand it up in a glass container to drain dry. You can also spread it on a dry cloth over a flat surface, but it won't dry as fast, and may show water spots.

Step 2
Store your dry flatware in a clean, dry drawer. Choose a drawer that is easily accessible so that you will use it often.
-
Step 3
Keep your flatware away from the dishwasher. Although some people say that they wash silver in the dishwasher, eventually the dishwasher will eat away the soft patina and damage the surface. The silverware will look dull and spotty. Some people recommend putting foil in the bottom of a sink and soaking silver in a mixture of dishwasher detergent or baking soda and water. Not a good idea. This technique will eventually cause the same kind of damage that your dishwasher causes.

Step 4
Polish your silverware occasionally, although not as often as you might think. The more you use it, the less often you will need to polish it. Some foods such as eggs and mayonnaise will tarnish silver. That's why it's important to wash the pieces as soon as possible after you use them. Air that is very humid will also cause your silver to tarnish. Use a polish that is meant to be used only for silver, not one that can be used for all metals. Apply the polish to each piece with a soft cloth, rub until the dark spots are gone, then rinse. Dry each piece carefully before you store them.
