Things You'll Need:
- Wide-toothed Comb
- Narrow-toothed Comb
- Spray Bottle
- Mousse
- Ponytail Holder
-
Step 1
Dampen the hair with a spray bottle.
-
Step 2
Apply a dollop of mousse to the mid-shaft area of the hair. Avoid using styling products at the base of the hair because your sectioning lines will not blend in nicely if they're glued to the scalp.
-
Step 3
Make a ponytail at the back of the head. A herringbone braid can be done without a ponytail, but for beginners it's easier to start with a ponytail.
-
Step 4
Pick up two pieces of hair at the top center of your ponytail and cross them over each other once. The herringbone is a two section braid (as opposed to the traditional three sectioned braid). Each turn brings hair from one side to the other.
-
Step 5
Add a section of hair from the ponytail to each side and cross them each over again. Repeat this process several times and eventually the braid design will begin to show. Continue braiding this way until you reach the ends and secure it with a ponytail holder.
