Hi everyone. I'm Andrea Eldridge from Nerds On Call and Callnerds.com for eHow.com, here today to talk about how to install a wireless router. These days, it seems like everything is designed to get on the Internet, from handheld electronics to video games. If you have a high-speed Internet connection, a wireless network will let all of your gadgets share the Internet. While your equipment will probably look a little different from mine, the basic structure is going to be the same. Your Internet service provider shoulder have left you with a modem connected to a jack in the wall. This acts as the receiver for your Internet signal. First, unplug your modem, plug in your wireless router. There are two ports on your modem. One connects the modem to the jack in the wall, the other will fit a network cable. Plug one of the network cables into the port on your modem. Your router will have several ports. Plug the other side of the network cable into the port on your router marked either Internet or WAN. Power your modem back on. Wait for the lights on the front of your router to indicate that it's established a WAN connection with your modem. Plug another network cable into one of the land ports on your router and connect the other end to the Ethernet port on your computer or laptop. Try using the installation disc that came with our router to run your system through the basic setup steps and walk you through configuring your router. An unsecured wireless network will allow anyone within range to access unprotected data on your network, or even use your Internet connection to do potentially illegal things like transmit viruses or download pirated content. Not all wireless devices support all encryption types. If it's available, select WPA, it's the most universal. Any wireless capable device in the vicinity of your router should now see your network. Prompt the device to search for available networks. Select your network from the list of available connections, enter your password and connect.
