How to Draw Girls

Girls have different facial features than men, and require a unique way of drawing. You have to make your art reflect their feminine facial shapes, larger lips, and less imposing chins. Once you master a few simple tricks, you will be able to draw more lifelike looking women. Keep in mind that the eyes, chin and lips will be the three things that most prominently define your drawing as male or female.

Instructions

1. Create a head by drawing an oval, but make it much thinner at the bottom and more rounded at the top. Make the shape "soft" and feminine, and allow room for the hair, which will be long and full.

2. Draw a horizontal line for the eyes and a vertical line for the nose and center of the chine.

3. Draw large eyes that take up more than a quarter of the face. The eyes can be defined with two hockey stick shaped lines on either side. Or, start with a straight line to define the bottom of the eye, that curves up at sharp angle on the inside of the eye. Then draw another straight line that cuts sharply down towards the inside edge of the eye. Then draw straight line across in a quick motion to define the bottom edge of the eyelid.

4. Add thick eyelashes to the outside edge of the each eye. Just draw one thick swash of eyelids that ends in a point, do not draw them individually.

5. Draw a heart shape in the midpoint of the head for a nose. Do not close this heart shape on the top, and make the point a rounded bottom. For an upturned nose, just invert the shape. Now create two small nostrils by drawing long ovals along the sides of this heart, then shade the bottom half.

6. Add the lips. Women's lips are typically larger and fuller than a man's, so they will take up most of the width of the head. You can just draw a simple flattened "M" shape for the top lip, then a line to define the bottom of the lower lip. Give this lip a curve shape to indicate pout lips.

7. Form the chin of your girl by drawing a sharp, oval shape. It should be more angular and not square like a typical man's jaw. The lines of a girl's chin are very soft, and curvy, they are never sharp and angular. Do not make the chin prominent, and it should come to a small rounded point, a quarter of the width of the lips.

8. Draw two lines on each side of the cheek to define the cheek bones.

Tips & Warnings

• Study drawings that depict girls, notice the chin is thin, and angular, the lips are very full and large. The eyes are also larger than a man's, and the nose is always a simple shape, with no hard lines on either side. While a man's chin looks as if it would prop up a head if it were set on a table, a women's chin would not.

• Do not over draw a woman's face. Adding a lot of shading, lines to the side of the nose, and a square chin, will make your drawing look more like a man.
