A flutter performed on a floating tremolo system is a very cool "pyrotechnic" guitar technique that can be used to show off during a solo or to add texture to rhythms. It is relatively simple to perform, but difficult to use well in the context of a song. When attempting this technique, be sure your guitar is set up well and all locking nuts or saddles are tight. If you are ready to try this, read on to learn how to flutter on a guitar tremolo.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Electric guitar
  • Floating tremolo unit, such as a Floyd Rose
  1. Step 1

Fret and pick a note somewhere near the twelfth fret on the G, B or high E strings.

  2. Step 2

As soon as possible after you pick the note, lightly slap the end of the tremolo arm so your hand glances off the end. The arm should snap back into place, causing the entire unit to vibrate or flutter. Your note should be given a very fast and shaky vibrato effect.

  3. Step 3

Alternately try bending the arm down in a "dive-bomb" sort of maneuver, sliding your hand off the edge while the arm is still bent. Again, the tremolo should snap back to normal and make the flutter effect.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice this technique with double stops, chords and single note runs. There is a wide array of possibilities for its use, but each one will need to be mastered independently.
  • Don't slap the tremolo arm too hard, or you will risk damage to the unit or to your guitar.
