Whether you're getting married or engaged or simply re-doing a ring that's been passed down, you want to make each ring uniquely yours. Of course, while most people know the basic things they want--gold or silver or white gold, diamond, pearl or ruby, putting it together and making it look nice seems to be beyond most people. Fortunately, it's an easy thing to learn to do. Soon you can be setting rings like a pro.

Things You'll Need:

  • ring
  • stone
  • band
  1. Step 1

Choose the stone you want. Before you can do anything else for, or with, the ring, you need to choose the stone you want. Do you want a diamond? A ruby? An amethyst? Your birthstone? Your child's birthstone? Although most women choose to have diamond engagement rings, there are still women who prefer another stone simply because they don't like diamonds or because they prefer something else. There is no rule that says you have to have any certain stone, so research the stones that are available, their prices and colors and choose the one you feel suits you best.

  2. Step 2

Pick the shape you want. It's not enough to just choose the stone you want. because most ring stones can come in one of 17 or more different shapes, including round, princess, emerald, pear, marquise, heart, oval and cushion. This is important because the shape of the stone can also affect its quality and the way stones are cut can make them more or less valuable. You also want something you're comfortable with. Some people love big rings with big stones, but others like smaller stones cut into a less noticeable shape. Look at the different shapes and decide which you like the most.

  3. Step 3

Decide on the band you want.Do you want a silver ring? Gold? White gold? Some people know exactly what they want whereas other people have no idea or don’t care. Consider your other jewelry while you consider what you want. If the rest of your silver is gold, you may want another gold ring, or you may want something different, and consider white gold. If you feel it's time to add a little silver to your repertoire, or you only wear silver, you might choose differently. Also look at your stone with the band.

  4. Step 4

Consider adding smaller stones.Do you want a solitary stone? Do you want a single stone with diamonds around the band? Do you want a three-stone setting? A five-stone setting? Some people like the single stone, while others prefer something bigger and more expensive. The important question is what you like and to make sure you've considered all of your options. If you couldn't choose between several different stones, this may be the opportunity to add some variety.

  5. Step 5

Put it together. Now that you know the stone and stone shape and band style and have considered adding extra stones, check out how it looks all together and make sure it's something that you really like. If you can, look at it on-line or talk to a jeweler who can show examples.
