The Sanskrit term Sadhana translates as "means to attainment." For Hindu traditions, what is to be attained is moksha, or liberation from illusion that causes the cycle of rebirth. Sadhana is Puja (worship), Japa Yoga (mantra meditation), devotion, works, fasting and other austerities. Specifically, there are thousands of Sadhanas which one can perform.

Instructions

    • 1

Chant mantras that are specific to the chosen Sadhana. This merges the subconscious mind with the deity to whom the Sadhana is addressed.

    • 2

Energize your will with the help of a powerful guru. As the Sadhak (the one performing the Sadhana), you call upon the Sadguru to transfer his energy to you. This is known as Diksha.

    • 3

Worship the deity. Every sadhana is different and has different procedures. However, in every case, a deity is worshiped. There are procedures for worship. In each form of worship, different numbers and types of articles are offered to the deity. These are usually flowers, incense, water, sandalwood paste and fresh fruits or vegetables.

    • 4

Select a simple Sadhana. You may choose a simple practice such as lighting a candle at the same time every night and blowing it out after a certain period of time. In this way, you spiritualize the practice and your mind follows.

    • 5

Perform the Sadhana regularly. Whatever you decide to do, perform the same acts for a set number of days at the same time. This regularity creates a sacred space in your mind.

    • 6

Ritualize your practice. What you normally do every day is not Sadhana, such as bathing or eating. Select a practice that is purifying and that is a form of worship of a divine being or saint.
